What is the best present you have ever given someone else?
The last time I gave a present and meant it was at some birthday party when I was seven years old, for some brat kid I only knew through Sunday school. Oh, yes, I have given many presents since; you always need to give a Christmas present here and an Easter egg there to keep on people’s good side. It makes you look human, like you actually give a damn. I know I couldn’t care less, so that’s why I can put up with doing such an act. I may be spending a small amount of my pay, but it sure as hell keeps people off my back. As a public servant, I need to work, and to work well I need to work without interruption.
Even if your not talking about material presents, I don’t go around doing that good willed, mushy pansy crap either. I keep my distance from people, I lead them, but I don’t become friends with them. Unlike some, namely Grissom and the rest of his lot, I don’t get personally involved with my co-workers, let alone anybody else involved in my work. I don’t do favours for victims; I solve the case and immediately move on my way. I do all that I can do for a case, and I give what I need to give and that is all. I’m not a generous man; I’m an honest person who does his job well, and correctly. I’m reliable because I concentrate on the task at hand and not on the whims and fancies of other people.
